Before starting anything important, many Hindu families first pray to Lord Ganesha. The 8 Mukhi Rudraksha carries that same symbolism. It is associated with Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and is often chosen at the start of a new job, business, home or project.
What is an 8 Mukhi Rudraksha?
An 8 Mukhi (Aath Mukhi) Rudraksha has eight natural lines on its surface. Today it is popularly linked with Lord Ganesha, although the Shiva Purana names Vasumurti and Bhairava for this bead. It is different from the “Ganesh Rudraksha”, which is a bead with a natural trunk-like bump rather than eight lines. Read about it in Ganesh Rudraksha.

Traditional benefits of 8 Mukhi Rudraksha
- Removing obstacles: The main belief around this bead is that it supports smooth progress in new ventures.
- Clarity in decisions: Ganesha is linked with wisdom (buddhi), so the bead is associated with better judgement.
- Rahu-related remedies: In Vedic astrology, it is commonly suggested during Rahu Mahadasha or when Rahu causes confusion or delays.
- Focus for business: Traders and entrepreneurs often keep it in their office or cash box.
Who usually wears an 8 Mukhi Rudraksha?
- People starting a new business, job or project
- Entrepreneurs, traders and people in sales
- Those going through Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha, on an astrologer’s advice
- Devotees of Lord Ganesha
How to wear an 8 Mukhi Rudraksha
- Energise it on a Wednesday (Ganesha’s day) or Monday morning after bathing.
- Wash it with clean water or Gangajal, place it before a Ganesha image and offer durva grass or a red flower.
- Chant “Om Hum Namah” or “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” 108 times.
- Wear it as a pendant in a red thread, or in silver or gold.
How to check if an 8 Mukhi is original
- Eight Mukhi beads are less common than 5 or 6 Mukhi, so line-carving is a risk. Check that all eight lines are natural.
- Ask for an X-ray-based lab certificate that shows eight internal seed chambers.
- Compare price with trusted sellers. Unusually low prices can be a warning sign.
What do the scriptures say about the 8 Mukhi Rudraksha?
The Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita, chapter 25, verse 73) describes the 8 Mukhi Rudraksha as Vasumurti and Bhairava, linked with a full lifespan. The Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad links it with the eight Matrikas, the eight Vasus and Ganga. Neither text names a ruling planet; the link with Rahu comes from later astrology.
You can read both passages in English in the Shiva Purana translation on wisdomlib and the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad on shaivam.org. Botanically, every mukhi is the stone of the same tree, Elaeocarpus angustifolius (often sold as E. ganitrus), as listed in the eFlora of India. On price, traders quoted NPR 1,500–3,000 in 2015 and NPR 1,500–5,000 (8–12 Mukhi band) in 2025 at the Bhojpur farm gate (Kathmandu Post, 2015; Singhadarbar, 2025), before sorting, lab testing and retail.
