A kundli yog (yoga) is a special combination of planets in your birth chart that produces a particular result: wealth, fame, power, learning or, in some cases, challenges. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika describe hundreds of yogas. Knowing which ones are in your chart helps explain your strengths and when life’s big breakthroughs are likely.
This guide explains 15 of the most important auspicious yogas, how to identify them, a few challenging yogas to know about, and why having a yoga does not automatically guarantee results.

First, three basics
- Houses: the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses are kendras (angles, the pillars of the chart). The 1st, 5th and 9th are trikonas (trines, the houses of fortune). The 6th, 8th and 12th are dusthanas (difficult houses).
- Lords: each house is ruled by the planet that owns the sign in it. “The 9th lord” means the ruler of the 9th house.
- Association: planets form a yoga by being together in one house (conjunction), aspecting each other, or exchanging signs (parivartana).
15 powerful yogas in Vedic astrology
1. Raj Yoga
Formation: the lord of a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) associates with the lord of a trikona (1, 5, 9). Result: status, authority, success and recognition. The strongest Raj Yogas involve the 9th and 10th lords (Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga).
2. Gajakesari Yoga
Formation: Jupiter is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) counted from the Moon. Result: wisdom, fame, a respected name and lasting prosperity. Jupiter and the Moon should both be strong and free of affliction for full results.
3. Dhana Yoga
Formation: the lords of wealth houses, the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th, associate with each other or with the lagna lord. Result: earning ability and accumulated wealth. The dasha of a planet involved often brings financial growth.

4. Budhaditya Yoga
Formation: the Sun and Mercury sit together in the same house. Result: intelligence, communication skill and success in education and business. Because Mercury is always close to the Sun, this yoga is common; it works best when Mercury is not combust (too close to the Sun).
5–9. Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas
These five yogas form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own sign or exaltation sign and in a kendra from the lagna.
| Yoga | Planet | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 5. Ruchaka | Mars | Courage, leadership, success in the armed forces, police, sports or engineering |
| 6. Bhadra | Mercury | Intelligence, eloquence, success in business, writing and communication |
| 7. Hamsa | Jupiter | Wisdom, righteousness, respect, success as a teacher, advisor or spiritual guide |
| 8. Malavya | Venus | Beauty, charm, luxury, a happy marriage, success in the arts |
| 9. Shasha | Saturn | Discipline, authority over people, success in politics, administration or large organisations |
10. Neechabhanga Raja Yoga
Formation: a debilitated planet has its weakness cancelled. Common conditions: the lord of the sign it is debilitated in, or the lord of its exaltation sign, is in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon; or the debilitated planet is aspected by its sign lord. Result: early struggle turns into remarkable success. Many self-made people have this yoga. Read our detailed guide to Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.
11. Viparita Raja Yoga
Formation: the lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th house are placed in one of these same difficult houses. There are three types: Harsha (6th lord), Sarala (8th lord) and Vimala (12th lord). Result: success that comes through adversity, sudden reversals of fortune in your favour, and victory over opponents.
12. Lakshmi Yoga
Formation: a strong lagna lord, and the 9th lord placed in a kendra or trikona in its own or exaltation sign. Result: wealth, comfort, a noble character and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
13. Chandra-Mangal Yoga
Formation: the Moon and Mars are together in one house, or aspect each other. Result: earning power, business sense and drive. It can also make a person emotionally intense, so the rest of the chart matters.
14. Adhi Yoga
Formation: natural benefics (Mercury, Venus and Jupiter) occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon. Result: leadership, a comfortable life, good health and victory over enemies.
15. Amala Yoga
Formation: a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, or an unafflicted Mercury or Moon) sits in the 10th house from the lagna or the Moon. Result: a spotless reputation, ethical conduct and lasting fame through good deeds.
Challenging yogas you should know about
- Kemadruma Yoga: no planet (other than the Sun, Rahu and Ketu) in the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon. Linked with emotional loneliness or financial ups and downs. It is often cancelled by other factors in the chart.
- Kaal Sarp Yoga: all seven planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. Linked with delays and sudden turns, but also with intense ambition and achievement.
- Guru Chandal Yoga: Jupiter with Rahu. Can confuse judgement and values, or produce unconventional thinkers.
- Grahan Yoga: the Sun or Moon with Rahu or Ketu. Affects confidence (Sun) or peace of mind (Moon).
A challenging yoga is not a curse. Its effects vary greatly with the strength of the planets involved, and remedies such as mantras, charity and worship can soften it.
One traditional remedy is chanting a Durga mantra, especially for yogas involving Rahu.
Why a yoga may not give results
Many people find a Raj Yoga in their chart and wonder why they are not yet successful. Classical astrology gives clear reasons:
- Planetary strength: the planets forming the yoga must be strong (not debilitated, combust or badly afflicted).
- Dasha timing: a yoga usually activates during the mahadasha or antardasha of a planet involved in it.
- Cancellation: other combinations can weaken or cancel a yoga.
- Divisional charts: the yoga should also be supported in the Navamsa (D9) and, for career, the Dashamsa (D10).
- Effort and karma: a yoga shows potential; your actions bring it to life.
For marriage timing, many astrologers also compare the chart with signs on the hand, such as the marriage line on palm.
